We understand that visiting a church on a Sunday morning for the first time can be kind of freaky. What do you wear? What will the music be like? Are there any real people there without big hair and caked on make-up? Does the pastor really have anything to say? Will this be just another religious service?
Hey, we’ve been there.
What should you wear to Koinos? Wear whatever you want. Seriously. Depending on the time of year, most will wear jeans or shorts. No robes or ties for the pastor; they just aren’t very comfortable. He’s kind of a “jeans” guy.
The Worship Gathering begins at 10:00 AM, but you might want to be a little early. Some people will greet you at the door and try to be as helpful as possible. There will be plenty of coffee and refreshments available, along with anything from Weezer, U2, and Johnny Cash to some contemporary worship music playing in the background.
During the Worship Gathering, music is typically led by a band including acoustic guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, etc., and is anything but boring. Next, we often play a clip from a popular film, such as Dead Poets Society, or from a popular song by someone like Coldplay that ties into the theme we will be examining. The teaching will be out of the Bible and we are sure you will find that it connects in a deep, real way to your life. Often, there is a time after the teaching for individuals to ask questions or make comments and to receive answers and input. At times we take communion or have other opportunities for you to engage and explore God—or you can simply kick back and take it all in.
Older children (school age) will join us for part of our worship time. We really think highly of children and we know enough to understand that they learn more by doing stuff than by being told stuff. We include them in much of what we do during the service; then, during the teaching, they are dismissed to participate in their own time of teaching that will be more appropriate to their level of interest and understanding. There is also a nursery where you can drop off the little tykes who will be put into the hands of many well-trained, qualified staff members.
In general, we are real people who gather together once a week to explore life with God through Jesus, instead of all the religious stuff. There’s really nothing fake about us. We want to honestly learn from our God and be completely ourselves when we are together.
